🍁 Nomiyama Kannonji Temple — Where Autumn Paints the Mountains of Fukuoka

Nomiyama Kannonji Temple in Sasaguri, Fukuoka, is known for stunning autumn leaves. Over 1,000 maples surround the Yugi Daihoto Pagoda, glowing in red and gold. Easily reached from Fukuoka City, it’s a must-visit spot from late October to mid-November.

Introduction

It was one of those crisp autumn mornings when the air feels just cool enough to hint that the season has truly changed. I decided to take a drive into the mountains of Sasaguri, Fukuoka, to visit Nomiyama Kannonji Temple, affectionately called Nomiyama-san by locals.

Perched about 450 meters above sea level, this temple is surrounded by forests that burst into color each fall. As I stepped out of the car and walked toward the main gate, I was greeted by a sea of fiery red, bright orange, and golden leaves shimmering under the clear blue sky — the kind of view that instantly makes you forget the city you came from.

What Makes Nomiyama Kannonji Special

Located at 227-4 Hagio, Sasaguri-machi, the temple belongs to the Koyasan Shingon sect and holds the title of a Bekkaku Honzan (a special head temple).

According to one legend, the name “Nomiyama” (meaning “mountain to drink from”) dates back to ancient times, when Princess Tamayorihime, daughter of the sea god Watatsumi, drank from a sacred spring that flows here.

Throughout the year, Nomiyama Kannonji is known as both a “temple of flowers” and a “temple of autumn leaves.” Visitors come not only for the spiritual atmosphere, but also to enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and brilliant foliage in autumn.

Location and Accessibility

Though deep in the mountains, access is surprisingly easy. From the Fukuoka IC on the Kyushu Expressway, it’s about a 20-minute drive, and by train, JR Sasaguri Station is only 15 minutes away by taxi.

Because of its elevation, the temple’s trees start changing color earlier than those in central Fukuoka. When you reach the top of the winding road and the view opens up to the temple grounds, it’s hard not to whisper, “I’m so glad I came.”

Highlights of the Autumn Foliage

1. Early Peak Season

The leaves at Nomiyama Kannonji begin to change in late October and reach their peak from early to mid-November — aligning with the temple’s annual Autumn Festival.

2. A Spectrum of Colors

The temple grounds are filled with Japanese maples, wild cherry trees, hazel, oak, and especially dodantsutsuji (Enkianthus shrubs). Around the Hyakukannon Hall, over a thousand trees form a crimson wall of color that takes your breath away.

3. Perfect Photo Spots

The path leading to Tenno-in, the area around Hyakukannon Hall, and the view of the Yugi Daihoto Pagoda framed by red and gold leaves are must-sees. On a clear morning, sunlight filters through the branches, making the colors even more vibrant — it’s truly a photographer’s dream.

How to Enjoy the Autumn Festival

The Nomiyama Kannonji Autumn Festival runs from October 28 to November 24 (2025). During this time, visitors can explore the temple grounds, enjoy food stalls, browse handmade crafts at the Kannon Market, and even enter the usually-closed Yugi Daihoto Pagoda for a special viewing.

When I visited, the paths were lined with the aroma of roasted sweet potatoes and the cheerful chatter of families and photographers alike — the perfect blend of spirituality and community.

Access and Nearby Spots

  • 🚗 By car: About 20 min from Fukuoka IC; free parking for 300 vehicles.

  • 🚉 By train: JR Sasaguri Station → 15 min by taxi.

Nearby attractions include Nanzoin Temple, famous for its giant reclining Buddha, and the scenic Kyudai no Mori Forest, ideal for a peaceful stroll after your temple visit.

Tips Before You Go

The mountain air can get chilly, especially in the morning and evening, so bring a jacket and wear comfortable shoes — there are gentle slopes and stone paths.

Depending on the weather, the scenery changes dramatically: sunny days make the leaves shine, while cloudy or rainy days bring out a softer, more atmospheric beauty.

Conclusion

Visiting Nomiyama Kannonji in autumn isn’t just about seeing the leaves — it’s about walking among them, hearing them crunch underfoot, and feeling that quiet stillness only a mountain temple can offer.

If you’re looking for a place that combines nature, culture, and calm in one visit, this hidden gem in Sasaguri should definitely be on your fall itinerary. Come early, take your time, and let the colors of Nomiyama stay with you long after you’ve left.
